On Sunday, February 16th at 2 pm. I will tell and sing and play with anyone of any age who wants to learn about being a Proud Earthling! At Godfrey Daniels - info below!
I wrote a song for this event AND an action rhyme. I am posting the lyrics to the song below.
HOWEVER, I also chose some great stories and there will be a game and discussion and a secret (sort of ) club.
We are all earthlings.
The Earth is our home.
We love the lands, the skies and the seas
The sun and the rain, the snow and the breeze.
We are all earthlings.
The Earth is our home.
We share this home with rabbits and bears
the fish in the seas, and, birds in the air.
Break:
We are all Earthlings
We cherish this place.
We’re a family of Earthlings
On a ball out in space.
We are all Earthlings
The Earth is our home
We love the deserts, the jungles and towns,
The mountains and swamps, and the mud, rich and brown
We are all Earthlings
The Earth is our home.
We share this world with gators and bees,
the crawlers on land and the climbers in trees.
Break:
We are all Earthlings
We cherish this place.
We’re a family of Earthlings
On a ball out in space.
We are all Earthlings
The Earth is our home by Karen Maurer, 2020
I just finished the action rhyme after reading about the ways people greet each other around the world. To be totally factual, most people accept a bow or a handshake. But whenever possible, native
people's traditions should be respected. The story behind Tibet's odd greeting is wonderful! (See below!)
Here is my beta version of How Do People Say Hello? It may change before Sunday, who knows?
(Children pair off. In each verse, they act out how people greet each other. In flu season, you may want to skip or "air play" New Zealand and Oman. I am doing this with a teddy bear since I have a cold.)
(Repeat this first verse between the others. Children can wave to each other during this verse or greet other people in the way they just learned about.)
What do people do to say hello?
How do people say hello?
In America, you take
your friend’s hand
and give a shake
That’s what people do to say hello.
In far off Tibet, some monks
will stick out their tongues
That’s what people do to say hello.*
In Japan, bowing is polite
When you meet both day and night
That’s what people do to say hello
In New Zealand, touch together
foreheads and noses*
That’s what Kiwis do to say their helloes-es.
That's what people do to say hello.
In the deserts of Oman,
Men touch noses when they can*
That’s what people do to say hello.
The Masai like to jump.
Some people do fist bumps.
A hug, a wave, a fast hand jive
A smile, a slap, a quick high five.
People do so many things to say hello
So many things to do to say hello! Karen Maurer 2020
Okay for the asterisks.
#1. In the 6th century, Tibet had a horrible king, cruel and nasty. He had a black tongue. Tibetans stick out their tongues to assure people they greet that they have no relationship to that nasty king. Reincarnation plays a part in this greeting but young children might not get it.
#2. This greeting is called hongi and is very sweet. Eyes can be open or closed. Also, Kiwi is a slang phrase for someone who lives in New Zealand because kiwi birds are native to New Zealand.
#3. Touching noses appears to be an Arab tradition. Since men and women have very separate roles, I only found this greeting listed as involving men.
NOT AN ASTERISK: Inuits (sometimes called Eskimos) do NOT rub noses. They touch their nose and upper lip to a person's forehead and breathe in. First one person does it, then the other.
I love Earthlings. We are awesome!
Update: I found the info about greetings on these websites:

Sunday Selfie - Fight Delight? Nah.
Yesterday, as I ran errands, I caught snatches of a radio essay on "delight". It made me smile.
The idea of "delight" is far from our minds in the dark of winter. In fact, most mornings when I wake up, delight is the last thing I consider. First, I groan because it is later than I hoped. Then I sneer because it is earlier than I want it to be. (Figure that one out.) Then I stretch and discover that the joints and parts that hurt last night still hurt this morning. Some mornings, I refuse to get out of bed, yet.
But I always do rise and shuffle through the day. Delight can catch me then, unawares. Oh, but not if I am wary. I fight the delight because no one can make me feel - or do - anything I don't want to do.
Except...I do want to be delighted. Even in my battle against surprising happiness, I do things that surprise me with happiness. I should just give in.
Last night is a case in point. Now, I know the name Bill Staines. He wrote a song called "Place in the Choir" that was turned into a picture book in the '90s. Then Kadir Nelson (Kadir Nelson!) illustrated the song in 2009. We sang the song around campfires in the 80s, I think.
I know that Bill Staines has written some great songs, covered by some very well-known singers. I had never been to a Bill Staines performance, though.
I volunteered to work the counter at a place that delights me in so many ways, Godfrey Daniels, the Lehigh Valley's original listening room. Because, why not? I mean, Bill Staines is FAMOUS!! and if I volunteer I get to see the performance for free. (Hint! Lehigh Valley peeps! It's worth the scrambling before the show and at the break to be a volunteer. The caveat is this; you will end up purchasing tickets for other shows because so many folk legends play this club.)
Delight. It hit me square in the eardrum and in the eyes - delight in music so smooth and so sweet that worries roll off your shoulders. Delight - to see and hear people of so many different ages singing together. It was like a tent meeting of kindness - delight.
His songs are about rivers, home, old dogs, bridges, rodeos, road trips, children, memories, love, loss, hope - these are the building blocks of delight.
Today, the weather is meh! and my head aches. I could take a walk so I could complain about the wet weather and the damp. Or play foolish games on the computer, or nap.
Instead I think that I will put my new Bill Staines CD on while I make a home cooked meal and feel delight in my home, in warmth, in coziness and in the talent of an American folk singer.
When delight jumps out, invite it in. Put on some music. Make some soup. Set your mopey self free.

Stories - April 6th
My accordion is ready with her very own mustache and so am I.
Ready to sing (badly), play (loudly) and tell lots of fun stories. I have stories about people with mustaches and animals without mustaches. I have songs and games to play.
So bring your mustaches with you tomorrow - real or fake - to Godfrey Daniels at 2 pm for the LAST Children's Series Storytelling event of the year.

Mustaches!
Mustaches! And more in the works. If I ever figure out how I crochet them I will post the directions on the Let's Make Stuff page.
Anyway, can you guess why I am producing these fake facial hair products??? Because I will be telling stories at Godfrey Daniels on Sunday at 2 pm - and my stories will have mustaches in them!!! So I need some samples, see?
So pray for sun and warmth. Right now, it feels like we will be housebound til April (3 to 6 more inches on the way, they say, bringing our total for the day to what? 14 inches? 18 inches?).
Time to make some more mustaches!

Guest Teller - ME!!
I'd like to introduce the featured teller at Sunday's Children's Series Show at Godfrey Daniels.
ME! Karen Maurer :
Come out and hear me fumble around on the accordion; tell stories about mustachioed people; offer a prize for the best mustache so please bring one along; get people up on stage to march and mug and sing.
The date: Feb. 16th, 2014
The time: 2 pm
The Place: Godfrey Daniels
Admission: $4.50 for people 5 years old and older. And Cops'n'Kids will be there to hand out free books.
See you there.
I told stories when I was just a youngster - on long car trips after
we sang every round my mother could teach us. Dad ruled the car radio
and classical music made us kids itchy. So I was radio Karen, making
stories up, telling stories from memory.
It just followed that I would tell stories as a "profession". Books and stories; stories and books...we know that stories came first but books were sure to follow. And I love both of them.

Kathy Long at Godfreys
The Children's Series at Godfrey Daniels started two weeks ago with Larry Sceurman telling magical stories, including an awesome re-telling of "The Five Chinese Brothers". He used the Chinese linking rings with that story. So much fun.
This Sunday, January 20th, the featured teller at Godfrey Daniels is Kathy Long!!! The fun starts at 2 pm. Kathy telling has a droll side. She keeps you leaning forward as she winds through her stories. Don't miss her wonderful performance.
Kathy has also written and illustrated a couple of books. One features the Bethlehem Star that sits on South Mountain. Kathy will sell and sign her books and CDs after the storytelling event.
Join the fun at Godfrey Daniels on Sunday, January 20th at 2 pm. Admission is $4.50. Children under five attend free. And Cops'n'Kids will be there handing out FREE books.

Storytelling Thursday
Storytelling is everywhere. Ev-er-y-where. I picked up a book at BEA - Cinderella's Housework: Families in Crisis, Households at the Edge of Chaos by Paul Meinhardt. It is a book that addresses socio-economic crises and offers solutions. The first chapter is an analysis of Cinderella from the social scientist's perspective.
Stories - the ones that persist - speak truth to us all. We can not escape stories. And we can not relegate them to the province of childhood.
That said, come out to listen to stories tomorrow night (June 22nd, 2012) at Godfrey Daniels. The show is a fundraiser for StoryFUSION and for the Maidencreek Old Time Music Festival. I'm telling. So is Chaz and Robin and Larry. It starts at 7:30 pm. Definitely NOT for kids - although teens will enjoy it.

Time Goes By...
Thursday came and went. I blame it on my job which only happens on Thursdays and alternate Saturdays. Then, Friday was a blur. And I did not fulfill my Story Thursday commitment. I do these things sometime.
So I will remind you all that Kristin Pedemonti will be the teller at the Children's Series tomorrow, Sunday, February 19th, at 2 pm at Godfrey Daniels.
I totally enjoy Kristin's performances. Check out the Storytelling Page for some cool news about other local tellers and for a new link of the week (or two weeks. sigh.)

Stories for Kids
The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild's Children's Series starts in just over two weeks. This is a series of storytelling performances held at Godfrey Daniels, 7 East Fourth Street in Bethlehem PA on the first and third Sundays - usually - of January, February, and March. This year, there is only one January performance because the first Sunday is New Year's Day!
So, at 2 pm, on January 15th, at Godfrey Daniels, all story loving youngsters, and story loving young-at-heart-sters, are in for a HUGE treat. Mary Wright will tell stories and she is superb. It doesn't hurt that Cops 'n' Kids will be there handing out FREE books as well. Admission is charged for this event. Very young children (under 2) are admitted free.
Mark your calendars NOW! (I'll remind you later.)
The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, teaching and preserving the art of storytelling in the Lehigh Valley.

Storytelling and Old Timey Music: Part 2

If tomorrow's performance of old time music is as much fun as tonight's storytelling performance, I will be worn OUT with fun-ness for awhile. Tonight was sooo good.
The Druckenmillers are always a treat and a wonderful advertisement for tomorrow night's show. Robin Berry's stories are always uplifting and gentle. Chaz told fairy tales with excitement and a little anthropology thrown in. I had a great time on stage. I hope the audience did, too. And Larry's last story of the night brought tears to my eyes. The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild is full of talented people.
You might hear those stories told some other night but they will not be the same. That is the wonder of live entertainment. It is never the same show twice.
Tomorrow at Godfrey Daniels, at 7:30 pm, the Druckenmillers will be joined by their son, Nathan, his girlfriend, Brittany, a clog-dancer, and three other musicians. Chaz Kiernan will tell a story or two. The night will be full of old time music. Tomorrow's concert benefits the Maidencreek Old Time Music Festival, held this year on Sunday, July 31st, in Berks County.

Storytelling and Old Timey Music
Come to Godfrey Daniels, tomorrow night, June 24th at 7:30 pm to hear stories and old time music with the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild (including my very own self!) and the Druckenmillers on fiddle, banjo and guitar. It is a guaranteed good time!
I plan to tell a true to life scary story - based entirely on Fact but necessarily and artfully embellished and an African folktale which will require some help from the audience. Chaz Kiernan is telling as well and who knows whether he will channel Mark Twain or visit the small mountain town of Lost Dollar? Larry Sceurman has some tales to spin and his stories are full of heart and humor. And Robin Berry will fill her listeners' hearts with wonder!
And in between, Tom and Betty Druckenmiller will play and sing.
But wait there's more! Come back on Saturday night and listen to the Druckenmillers and other local bluegrass and old time musicians play the whole night long.
Each concert costs $10 and the money goes to benefit the Story FUSION Festival and the Maidencreek Old Time Music Festival!
I'll be looking for you.
